DENTAL HYGIENISTS AND ORAL HEALTH INSTRUCTION

All our Hygienists are deeply committed to teaching people how to look after their teeth FOR LIFE. They are chosen for experience; only experienced hygienists are employed. This gives them depth of experience and extensive knowledge. They attend many Postgraduate Courses and read Dental Journals to keep up with the advances in modern Dental Treatment.

They offer a first-class preventive care programme.

Healthy gums and bone support teeth. (Most teeth in Britain are lost because of gum disease.)

They scale teeth to remove tartar and plaque, and give extensive Oral Hygiene Instruction so that Patients can avoid tartar build up In the future. They also give dietary advice to Adult Patients and to parents for Children's Dental Health.

The Hygienists cannot do any Treatment without the Patient having been first to the Dentist for assessment at a check-up - it is Illegal for them to so do.

WHY SEE A DENTAL HYGIENIST?

THE HYGIENISTS' ROLE IN HELPING TO PREVENT AND TREAT GUM PROBLEMS TO ENCOURAGE ORAL HEALTH.

When your Dentists refer you to a Dental Hygienist, they do so because you need the special skills for which the Hygienist has been trained - skills which can be unwisely under-estimated and undervalued.

Dentists are recognising the OVERWHELMING IMPORTANCE of periodontal (gum & bone) care. (Most teeth in adults are lost because they become loose through periodontal disease).

The DENTAL HYGIENIST is an important and senior member of the Dental Profession whose role will directly affect the health of your mouth, and the length of time you can expect to keep your teeth. Their aim is to help you to keep your teeth for life - they have obtained a qualification in Dental Hygiene to give the necessary knowledge and training and their skills are the CORNERSTONE of the modern Preventive Dental Practice for adults and children alike.

They are highly trained in the very intricate skills required to remove scale from tooth and root surfaces.

Another important function of the Hygienist is to DRAW your ATTENTION to particular problem areas in your mouth where cleaning may be difficult. The Hygienist will recommend a suitable toothbrushing technique for your mouth which may differ from that recommended to other people you know - don't be surprised, because every mouth presents different problems. If special brushes, dental floss etc. are required your Hygienist will instruct you in their use. (Please let them know if you cannot manage the techniques they recommend for you, so that they can help you towards an alternative way of achieving the desired result). All the toothbrushes, special floss and brushes, etc, are available at Reception.

Hygienists are highly trained skilled professionals. In employing them, your Dentists obviously recognise this fact. We know that you too will appreciate and respect their contribution to your overall Dental health. Please make use of your time with the Hygienists to ask any queries about Oral Hygiene that may be worrying you.

A large selection of specialised Oral Hygiene Aids are stocked for you, some of which are difficult to buy locally. The Hygienists will hold a stock in the Surgery and will personally recommend and demonstrate a particular Aid especially for you, if they consider this to be necessary.

Patients can then carry on the good work:- a controlled home brushing routine, and maintain their teeth and gums In good health.

THE HYGIENISTS' ROLE IN HELPING TO PREVENT DECAY.

It is well known that Fluoride applied to the surface of the teeth (as with toothpaste) makes the teeth less decay-prone.

Fluoride treatments are done by the Hygienists for adults with heavily restored teeth twice or four times a year.

IF YOU WISH TO HAVE REGULAR FLUORIDE TREATMENT TWICE OR FOUR TIMES A YEAR PLEASE SPEAK TO YOUR DENTIST WHO CAN PRESCRIBE THEM.

The teeth can also be covered with plastic coating to help prevent decay. This can be done for children (out of the NHS) and ALSO FOR ADULTS, a fact that is probably not recognised by most Patients.

DIETARY COUNSELLING

Finally, dietary advice is given. Only sugar and acid cause decay. Only FREQUENT ingestion will cause decay.

Diet can be discussed and problems often unrecognised by the Patient analysed and discussed and alternative foods and patterns of eating suggested.

PERIODONTAL TREATMENT (Gum & bone Treatment)

Dr B. Shephard BDS(Adel.) BSC Dent.(Hons) MDS (Adel.)

When there has been bone loss from around the teeth, the teeth are at danger - if the bone loss carries on, they will become loose, the bone will have infections, there will be pain, and they will eventually need to be extracted. It is often very difficult to clean around such teeth and In between them, and areas of infection may persist in spite of good oral hygiene by the patient and regular visits to the Dental Hygienist.

Your Dentist may consider that Treatment of a specialised nature is necessary, and may refer you to Dr Shephard, whose Practice is limited to Periodontology.

Various modern treatments are available, deep scaling, root planning and Surgical Intervention. They will be carried out over a number of weeks, and then the patient will return for re-assessment.

Dr Shephard accepts referrals for Periodontal Treatment from other Practices without this facility in Berkshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire & Hampshire.
